Fuengirola

At the foot of the Castle

Located at the foot of the Mediterranean, Fuengirola is one of the Costa del Sol’s tourist destinations par excellence. Known for its sandy beaches and calm waters, its 8 km. of coast travel from west to east, from the famous Sohail Castle to the popular areas of Los Boliches and Torreblanca. Its marina, together with the popular fishing port, completes the maritime activity of Fuengirola.

The proximity of the city to the coastal area results in one of the most extensive and varied leisure options on the Costa del Sol, in which the playful activities in restaurants, shops and party halls are blended with others od a cultural nature. The Zoological Park Bioparc delights the little ones with the visit to more than 140 tropical animal species that live in freedom in a natural environment. On the other hand, archeology also finds an important enclave in Fuengirola, with findings as representative as the “Termas de Torreblanca” and the “Salting Factory” and thermal baths known as “Finca del Secretario”, all of Roman origin.

At the foot of the Castle

On the western edge of the city stands the popular Sohail Castle, built by Caliph Abderramán III in 956. Located on a small hill next to the mouth of the Fuengirola River, it is currently a reference point for the summers of the province with the celebration of numerous concerts, festivals, street markets and cultural activities of all kinds. In its surroundings there are, in addition, the deposits of Suel and Finca Acevedo with traces of Phoenician and Punic activity.
